AI centres of excellence to power Delhi’s push for AI-driven governance

Delhi's two new AI Centres of Excellence aim to accelerate AI deployment in government departments for better public service delivery.

Delhi’s two newly approved AI Centres of Excellence (AICoE) are envisioned to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence solutions across government departments, aiming to improve efficiency, transparency and public service delivery, according to a statement from the Delhi IT Department. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has granted administrative approval for the centres at Netaji Subhash University of Technology (NSUT) and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.

The initiative is backed by a joint funding model involving MeitY, the Delhi government and industry partners, and also aims to support around 90-100 startups, train 6,000-7,000 individuals and generate more than 1,000 employment opportunities.

Delhi IT Minister Pankaj Singh reviewed the AICoE project on Wednesday alongside an AI IT training lab at Vikas Bhawan II, set up to enhance the digital capabilities of government employees through structured training in IT and e-governance systems. Officials said the lab is fully ready and expected to become operational within a month.

Industry partner commitments and a key performance indicator framework have already been submitted for the AI centres, with an MoU between MeitY and partner institutions currently in its official stages.
