Kerala’s Mission Samudra takes shape with a Tata-backed shipyard at Cochin Port
Kerala's Mission Samudra maritime strategy has its first shipbuilding tie-up, a joint venture between Malabar Cements and Tata Projects arm Artson Engineering at Cochin Port.
Kerala’s government-backed maritime strategy, Mission Samudra, is moving from plan to project with a new shipbuilding joint venture at Cochin Port between Malabar Cements Ltd and Artson Engineering Limited, a company under the Tata Projects Group.
Mission Samudra is designed as an integrated maritime development strategy that draws on Kerala’s coastal assets, including Vizhinjam International Seaport, Cochin Port and Cochin Shipyard, covering shipbuilding, ship repair, offshore fabrication, marine engineering, coastal manufacturing, logistics and other allied maritime industries.
For the Malabar Cements-Artson venture specifically, the government said all major approvals have already been secured, with Cochin Port Authority making the necessary land available and starting preliminary development work.
The state is framing the project as one part of a much larger investment ambition, targeting Rs 10,000 crore in investment potential over the coming years across multiple maritime projects and investors, both domestic and international.
Officials said discussions with several investors are currently under way, and that announcements will be made as each proposal reaches its final stage, as the government works to build what it calls a globally competitive maritime manufacturing ecosystem in the state.
