Why strawberries and cream, Wimbledon’s oldest tradition, just got a Delhi kulfi makeover

Wimbledon's strawberries-and-cream tradition, dating back to the late 19th century, has inspired a new kulfi flavour from a heritage Delhi dessert shop.

Strawberries and cream have been synonymous with Wimbledon since the late 19th century. Originally linked to strawberry season in the UK, the combination has evolved into one of the Championships’ most enduring traditions, with hundreds of thousands of portions served during the tournament each year.

A Delhi collaboration has now borrowed from that tradition and given it a distinctly local interpretation. Kuremal’s, one of Delhi’s oldest kulfi makers, introduced a limited-edition strawberry-and-cream kulfi at its Connaught Place outlet, blending the flavours of Centre Court with a classic Delhi summer dessert.

‘It has been particularly rewarding to see conversations celebrating the partnership as a meeting of two heritage brands, demonstrating how global sporting traditions can be meaningfully localised while remaining true to their origins,’ a brand representative said.

The kulfi, which features pieces of strawberry throughout, was launched during both the Wimbledon Championships and Delhi’s peak kulfi season, and has drawn tennis enthusiasts and dessert lovers alike to the outlet.
